Dos & Don’ts of Online Shopping

Do check for other ‘HTTPS’ & other information
When it’s time to pay for the purchases the connection should change from HTTP to HTTPS. Be sure to check before proceeding to pay. Also, check that the merchant has customer service e-mail addresses and phone numbers in case you have questions.

Do pay with a Visa card
Be sure to sign up for Verified by Visa through your bank. This SMS service sends a unique pass code to your mobile phone, so you can complete your online purchase. This ensures no one else can use your card online without access to your mobile phone.

  Do check your bank statement
Review your statement each month to ensure all the charges are yours. If you don’t recognize something, check your receipts and tell your bank about anything that is suspicious.

  Do safeguard your passwords
Safeguard your passwords for your e-mail, bank accounts and online shopping sites. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols to create a strong password that is difficult to guess. And don’t keep them all in a password file on your PC!

Do be aware of store policies
Be sure to read the returns policies before shopping. Make sure you can return purchases without any questions asked for a full refund if it doesn’t fit, is the wrong item or has defects.

Don’t buy from suspicious sites
Don’t buy from sites that don’t seem legitimate. Use your intuition. Buy from established merchants that list customer service numbers, e-mails and physical addresses.

  Don’t share your personal details
Do not reveal personal information such as your birth date, or mother’s maiden name to an online store. That information is not necessary for online purchasing, but can be used to access your other online information, including banking and e-mail accounts.

  Don’t forget to inspect
Inspect your purchases as soon as they arrive. If it isn’t what you ordered, make sure you notify the shop immediately. Dispute the transaction with your bank if you have trouble with the merchant.
